AWD-CP : CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRASSROOTS CULTURE IN COVENTRY
[Alan Denyer - owner of AWD RESTORATIONS, explains what the ‘creative projects initiative is all about..]
AWD-CP is the name we’ve given our initiative to promote grassroots culture in Coventry (CP is short for ‘creative projects’).
Gifting my spare time and expertise (refurbishment, makeover, branding, events management, curation, promotions & marketing) - and bringing in other like-minded individuals, with complementary skills - we’ve helped local community stakeholders transform their spaces into places where the public can enjoy culture.
From time to time we also put spare effort into programming not-for-profit events at various ‘found venues’ around Coventry.
My personal involvement in voluntary community projects began back in 2017 with ‘CETPOPUP’ - co-ordinating a 12 month ‘culture takeover’ of the Coventry Telegraph offices which attracted 25,000 people and provided opportunity for over 500 local arts & heritage practitioners - young & old.
More recently, I’ve donated 12 man weeks of time into delivering a project to restore & repurpose Earlsdon Library, including a new community events space.
In 2018, again pro-bono, I delivered a project to transform the large derelict basements at Holyhead Studios (Lower Holyhead Road) into a characteristic venue space.
Then, in 2019, as part of the Coventry 2021 City of Culture sponsored ‘summer of music’ festival I organised the hosting of a major film screening & exhibition at the West Indian Community Centre (Spon St), followed later in the year with the re-launch of the Priory Visitor Centre (City Centre).
